Christmas Letter 2010

Fear is the path of the dark side, fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering...Yoda, Star Wars Episode I

Fear Not Tough Mudder. After completing our second half marathon together in March and besting our previous time, we set our sites on a new adventure. Tough Mudder is a seven plus mile adventure course at 8000 ft elevation which includes 20 physical challenges along the way. We hired a personal trainer, enlisted two other couples, and completed the course with a shot of Tabasco and a run through flames. What is our next challenge? We'll keep you posted. Other activities we have enjoyed together include playing softball on a competitive team (which, yes is still playing in December) and leading a small group Bible study that went through topics like the Truth Project and the Relationship Principles of Jesus.

Fear Not Nocturnist. Brett continues his work as a hospitalist at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. Oddly he is one of th longest tenured members of the group, yet still gets questioned whether he is old enough to be a doctor. He is still working primarily night shifts, with a stretch of days mixed in once a month to keep him up on the newest developments in the hospital. This has allowed Brett to be more involved with the family and the homeschooling process as well as attend church most Sundays, at least when the kids' noses are not running.

Fear Not Homeschooling. We experimented with the concept last year with preschool and liked it. So this August, Joy changed her work schedule to one full day, which allowed Brett to assume the role of teacher and bring his own flair to the job. We continued with Classical Conversations Foundations program and are using a local charter which provides us with innumerable resources. Garrett's favorite part is getting to present his work to his education specialist. We have enjoyed watching Garrett develop a love for learning, and we enjoy learning right along with him. Brett likes to remind Joy, "he's not graduating high school this year." "Yes, but only begun his training has, " Joy answers back. We are having fun in our role as homeschool parents and embracing the extra time with our kids.

Fear Not Travel with Three Kids. Okay, maybe we haven't made it to Africa yet, but we did manage three plane flights and a long car ride. The first landed us in Idaho to see Joy's family and go tubing in the mountains. Our second allowed us to witness the first pitch of Spring Training for what would become the SF Giants World Championship season. The boys also collected Will Clark's autograph: Brett's boyhood dream. Our third landed us in Wisconsin and Michigan for more fun with Joy's other side of the family. And who can forget the 90 mph, without a seatbelt, dune ride down the MI dunes--yes the boys were along for that ride too! We also drove, yes drove, to San Diego for a relaxing week with Brett's family on the beach, as long as you navigated the bike path deathtrap between our condo and the beach. Finally we spent three days as a family at Spirit West Coast enjoying Christian music in the great outdoors.

Fear Not Helmet Free Existence. At the first sign of a pending wrestling match, Griffin is right in the middle of it, diving on top of people and wrapping them up. He is our tough little guy, who really doesn't want to nap or sleep because he doesn't want to miss anything his brothers are doing--sound familiar? Griffin is often found practicing his baseball swing, or warming up his pitching arm, so stay alert or one might be coming your way. He is also very sweet and his smile often captivates those he meets. Joy has been working on him saying "I love you" while his brothers are ensuring his Star Wars education is on schedule by teaching him to say words like "Millenium Falcon."

Fear Not Bleeding Head. After doing a face plant into a storm drain at a local park, Bryce looked up to realize he couldn't see very well, as he had split open his forehead and had a river of blood flowing down his face. Joy whisked him to the ER to be properly sutured up. Despite three adults holding him down, he left proclaiming "Mommy I was so brave!" This wasn't the only facial laceration this year. When later he split open his chin, Dr. Mom decide to save us $1000 with her skills, and then went shopping. Bryce has also enjoyed moving into Garrett's room and sharing a bunk bed. A few of his own activities include swim lessons, Awana, Lego building, and recreating Star Wars battles (his favorite being the snow base on Hoth).

Fear Not Broken Arm. In February, during a cartwheel at gymnastics, Garrett misplaced his right arm and suddenly something snapped. One ER visit, immediate reduction, casting, and $4000 later, we had met our medical deductible for the year. While the cast did prevent him from swimming and tee-ball tryouts, a month later, he was swinging a baseball bat (with the cast on), throwing, jumping and diving off the couches. He's all healed up now and if you ask him which arm he broke, he looks at both of them to try and figure it out and then shrugs his shoulders. Garrett's other activities this year included his first year of tee-ball, soccer, tap, Awana, swim lessons, and playing as much Star Wars, Legos, and Transformers that he could find time for (once again do you hear the influence of his father?)

Fear Not Death. This is the reason Jesus came into the world and was born as God incarnate in the manger. May we celebrate his birth this year and remember that Jesus overcame the power of sin and death on the cross when he was crucified and then raised from the dead. This opened up the opportunity to spend eternity with God in heaven if you accept Him as your savior who paid the price for your sins. Ask Jesus to give you that free gift and then live free of the fear of death forever.

Fear the Beard. Did I forget to mention that the San Francisco Giants won the World Series for the first time in SF this year? We enjoyed watching/listening to the playoffs together as a family. We truly enjoyed the embodiment of the Giants as a TEAM, where it was not dominated by any one guy and everyone seemed to have a hand in the championship. Contrary to Jedi teaching, "fear the beard" seemed to end a lot of fans' suffering and the slogan "Giant's baseball: torture" brought so much relief. We pray that your 2011 will be blessed and that you may experience some positive turnarounds yourself.

Love,

Brett and Joy, Garrett (5 1/2 years), Bryce (3 1/2 years), Griffin (20 months)

Christmas 2010

Christmas was a wonderful celebration this year for us. We spent the twelve days before Christmas going through the Twelve Days of Christmas and what each day symbolizes related to a Christmas theme. We celebrated by ourselves on Christmas Eve and then received a visit from dear friends with whom we shared dessert. On Christmas Day we joined Brett's family for some great food, presents, games, and good conversation.

We boys decided to wear red, while Mommy was the perfect complimentary color-green.

Daddy's family including our Great Uncle Bruce, Great Aunt Jeanne, Second Cousin Caitlyn, Aunt Wendy, Uncle James, Cousins Haley and Rachel, and Grammy and Poppy.

We cousins were gettin' silly with Grammy and Poppy.

A present for all of us boys: we opened it together with teamwork.

Griffin was trying to fly after this picture.

Bryce and I weren't sure when we were going to go through a costume change, we just knew we were WAY behind our cousins who were on costume number six already...

Big Brother Bryce, did you just get an R2-D2 case...can I see?

Grammy was pleasantly surprised (maybe shocked) that Bryce had produced such a nice artwork wrapping paper for her gift.

Just what Daddy needed: Chewbacca Rocks the Rap Disc. Oh, that's some of Dave's artwork...SWEET!

Mommy got new ideas for home PE class from her good friend Nicki. Bryce thinks he can make up his own dance too...

Anytime Daddy gets anything Star Wars related, he has three very happy sons...

I got excited about my new Star Wars items, of course my brothers were happy with everything I got too...

Bryce and I celebrate a cool present Griffin opened. Isn't it great that we all like the same stuff!

Here's a surprise, Star Wars...yes!

Would you believe that Bryce found this for his brother? What a cool gift!

Mommy and Daddy, we're all awake and it's Christmas Morning!

I can't wait to see what Griffin got!

I built my Transfomer and then used the box to store some of my favorites.

Visit With Santa

If you have ever experienced the mall line for Santa pictures, this was the entirely opposite situation. We hung out with Santa for about 10 minutes, just us. The boys each got to tell him what they wanted for Christmas. In Griffin's case it was to get out of the sleigh and back with Mommy! Oh well. At least we got some great pictures captured with some unbeatable expressions. If you want to know our secret, let us know and we'll happily share it.

Now I'm much happier that I'm back in Mommy's arms...

Christmas in the Kitchen

The Christmas season brought the baker out in Joy and the boys. They made cookies and other delightful treats as they learned more about measuring and mixing and how certain ingredients together can make things get bigger or tastier.

Stormtrooper pancakes...I could get used to this.

Rolling out the dough for some delicious candy cane cookies was fun. If you weren't looking I might slip some in my mouth.

First you roll out the dough, then you make the shapes, then...

...you cover them with sprinkles, and put them in the oven.

Griffin's favorite part was licking the beaters, he always beat Bryce to the punch on that.

We helped Mommy make this yummy dinner.

I think I'd like to eat one of those...if I could just figure out a way to reach them.

We each have our eyes on one of these for the munching.

Garrett 5y 7mo

Garrett continues to take in as much as he can from homeschool. He enjoys his time with Mommy as she works with him on topics and lessons. Sometimes he fakes that he can't sleep so that he can stay up later with Mommy to practice his reading and gain more undivided attention. In playtime he likes to have an elaborate base setup, but then rarely wants to involve any of his troops in battle. He prefers to come to the rescue of Daddy and Bryce's troops when they are viciously attacked by the dreaded enemies (the TV and the Bed). Garrett enjoyed practicing and performing in the Kid Country Christmas at our church where he sang and learned the hand motions for the songs. He is gaining confidence in gymnastics and enjoys having Joy watch so that she can reinforce things he is learning at home.

That's my name, don't wear it out.

I was trying to look sharp before singing at church.

Come on, don't you know the hand motions too?

Ah-ha, I spotted Mommy and Daddy taking my picture!

Kid Country Christmas...I'm right in the middle of it all.

Max (our outdoor cat) made it inside this December and we greeted her, sometimes to the point that she wanted back out quickly.

A pony ride at a birthday party...cool, sign me up.

I built this cool starship out of legos, but I also wanted to mention that this was Daddy's shirt 27 years ago--looks good on me, eh?

This Captain Rex helmet might be a little big for me, but check out my new rifle!

I'm wearing my Armor of God collection.

I was learning part of the components of a backflip, not ready for the real deal yet, but I'm getting there...someday.

Teacher Sam tries to get my blur of energy to slow down enough to hear some new pointers.

Bryce 3y 5mo

Bryce has spent most of this month yearning to build legos or play with Star Wars. His imagination is growing by leaps and bounds as he finds new ways to create battles, but he also likes to joing the "bad guys" so he can defeat his brothers. Bryce's most requested movie to watch is, by far, Empire Strikes Back. He also enjoys some of the more hands-on school topics relating to art and practical math. He showed an early flash of being interested in reading with the Bob books, but hasn't revisited it since. He has relished the opportunity to blow out candles each night with our advent wreath.

I'm not sure which I liked more, sticking my tongue out or holding the sign, well maybe I do know.

My very own TIE Fighter! I'm so excited!

My little brother is looking so much older, don't you think?

Max loves it when I hug her really tight...she usually doesnt' move for at least five seconds after I hug her.

Max and I have a love/hate relationship, but it is mostly love.

The pony wasn't quite as sure about me on her back, but then I wasn't very sure either.

I built this for my brother, Griffin, and he loves it!

Daddy wouldn't let Luke Skywalker (X-Wing Pilot) be a permanent fixture in front of our gingerbread house, but that didn't keep me from staring at it every day. When do we get to eat it?

Come see my new starship...it has four docking platforms and seven swivel mounted turrets!

Ooops, I just had to bite off his leg before the picture Mommy, he was so tasty.
